Effie Hutto

The Effie Hutto Scholarships are part of the continuing legacy of Mrs. Effie Hutto, who, through the Trustees of the All Saints’ Church Endowment Fund and All Saints’ Episcopal Church, Austin, Texas, has created a gift that rewards deserving scholars.
Mrs. Hutto devoted her life to learning, to encouraging students, and to promoting scholarship.The special permanent fund designated by her will now provides a student financial assistance fund administered through designated schools in the Central Texas Episcopal Church community.
Mrs. Effie Myrtle Covington Hutto was born on December 21, 1899, on a farm near Sutherland Springs in Wilson County, Texas. She was the eighth and last child of William Edmund and Laura Harper Covington.
When she was two years old, her family moved to Martindale in Caldwell County.The trip took two days by wagon, with an overnight camp by the river in Seguin. She graduated from high school in Martindale in 1916 and worked to support herself while attending college.She graduated from Southwest Texas Normal College (now Texas State University) in 1920.
Mrs. Hutto worked most of her life as a teacher and a school librarian in several school systems, including Bishop, Kingsville, Mineral Wells, Corpus Christi, San Marcos, and Austin. While teaching in Bishop she met Henry Hutto. They were married on December 23, 1920. The Huttos had two sons, Henry Hubert Hutto and Van Covington Hutto.
Mrs. Hutto died in Austin in 1993. She is buried in San Marcos beside her husband. She is remembered fondly at All Saints’ Church and throughout the Texas Episcopal Church community.
Mrs. Hutto’s joy in learning and her love for Christ’s church live on through The Effie Hutto Scholarships. For All Saints’ members who are qualified applicants, the annual scholarship deadline is April 1st.
