This year’s Bailey Lectures will be meaty, meaningful, and inspiring! Dr. Shankman is perhaps the finest cultural thought leader we have ever hosted as a Bailey lecturer. His lectures will turn us inside-out in the best kind of way. He holds the UNESCO Chair in Transcultural Studies, Interreligious Dialogue, and Peace and is co-director of the UNESCO Crossings Institute at the University of Oregon. Before coming to Oregon, he taught at Princeton, Columbia, and Harvard.

Join us for his first lecture on Thursday evening, November 21st , in Kinsolving Parish Hall, 7-9pm. Entitled, “Turned Inside Out: Reading the Russian Novel in Prison”, Dr. Shankman will explore the experience of being turned inside out and its relation to the significance of the word “God”. This lecture concludes with a 10-minute, award-winning documentary on Shankman’s teaching Dostoevsky in prison. There will be a reception in Masterson Library, immediately following.

His 2nd and 3rd lectures will be Saturday morning, November 23rd . The second lecture is titled “Xenophilia”; and will focus on the hospitality shown to the potentially dangerous stranger in Homer’s Odyssey. This lecture offers immense relevance and hope for the time we live in, a time fraught with inhospitable fear of the other. The third lecture, “Poems on Rembrandt as Midrash”; offers the chance to be up close and personal with Dr. Shankman through poetry and dialogue. Our hearts will be stirred by the transformative power of great texts.

We also have the privilege of being with Dr. Shankman on “Christ the King” Sunday that next morning, November 24th , when he will preach on the penitent thief who was turned inside out by Jesus’ undeserved suffering on the cross! From his perspective as a Reconstructionist Jew, Dr. Shankman’s take on the cross promises to widen our horizons in the best possible way. He will also facilitate a Q&A during the adult education hour between services.

Commenting on Shankman’s latest book and his work in prisons, Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking, says, “Prisons are places where you’re rocked to your core or, as Steven Shankman puts it, turned inside out. I urge you to join Shankman and his students as they encounter the great Russian novelists, and themselves, on a journey of suffering and redemption behind prison walls. A moving and innovative book.”

The Bailey Lecture Series is the direct result of endowment funds given by the parishioners of All Saints’ Church to honor the many years of outstanding service of The Rt. Rev. Scott Field Bailey. This endowment fund is used to promote and bring in well-known speakers to All Saints’ and offer their insights and expertise to the parish and the community at no charge. The Rt. Rev. Scott Field Bailey died in San Antonio on April 9, 2005. He helped people realize the love of God within themselves and the love that God has for all people. It is with a special pride that we at All Saints’ Episcopal Church honor him with the Bailey Lecture Series.
