Memorial Gift Remembering Karly Lipman Dedicated on March 17
Prayerful and deliberate thought has been put into a memorial at All Saints' for Karly Lipman who died on January 14, 2023. In on-going conversation with Karly's family, the purchase of a sacramental oil vessel ("oil stock") was made by the Acolyte Ministry and the Rector's Discretionary Fund on behalf of the parish. This vessel is for the sacrament of Unction. It will be kept in the ambry with the reserve sacrament of bread and wine from communion, above which the sanctuary lantern is always lit.
The newly dedicated vessel was dedicated, blessed, and put to use at the end of the 10:15 service on Sunday, March 17. Approximately 82 people received the sacrament of Unction.
Sacraments are outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual grace. Unction means "to anoint" for the purpose of spiritual and physical healing. Jesus' ministry included healing and early Christians continued his ministry as described in James 5:13-16:
"Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective."
Engraved on the oil stock is the cross of Christ with alpha and omega, evoking Revelation 22:13, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end." We lovingly remember Karly with this memorial sacramental vessel and continue in Jesus' ministry of healing.
