LEARN ABOUT AUSTIN ANGELS:
Austin Angels is a non-profit on a mission to help empower children and build sustainable foster homes by engaging all people, including the local faith community. All Saints’ parishioners have the opportunity to support a local foster family or youth through intentional giving, relationship building, and mentorship. Austin Angels serves the greater Austin area (DFPS Region 7). In this region alone, there are 4,300 children in care between the ages of newborn to 17 years old. Unfortunately 50-60% of foster homes close within the first year. One reason for this is because foster parents may feel overwhelmed and under supported. The agencies they're working with have heavy caseloads and are not always able to offer the support they need. Austin Angels gets to step in and help fill this gap by providing committed volunteers to walk alongside foster families for a year through our Love Box program as well as by providing one-on-one mentors to recently aged-out youth or youth who are at-risk of aging out of foster care through our Dare to Dream program. The reasons they are working so diligently to match children, youth, and families with supportive and committed volunteers is because of the staggering statistics that children in foster care face:
· 50% of the homeless population spent time in foster care
· 88% of human trafficking victims are former foster youth
· Only 50% of youth who age out of foster care will obtain a high school diploma; only 3% earn a college degree (even when they are offered a free ride to any state school)
· Children in care experience PTSD at more than twice the rate of combat veterans
Here’s a link to a short video that explains how we can work together to impact the Austin area. https://vimeo.com/377073936
